The Diani Beach Art Gallery has worked hand in hand with some of the premier developments and properties at the Kenyan Coast.
Artwork in public areas of boutique hotels and resorts, monuments in modern developments; all this in an effort to increase the reach of the artists represented and to promote their unique talents locally and internationally.
Among the coast establishments are: EnglishPoint Marina, Leopard Beach Resort and Spa, Swahili Beach Resort, The Maji Beach Boutique Hotel and Lantana Coral Drive.
This presents a great opportunity for guests, clients and patrons of the various establishments to appreciate works from various artists, including the possibility of property developers and owners to commission both artwork and sculptures for their developments.
In 2012, the Diani Beach Art Gallery was commissioned to identify and work with a sculptor capable of creating a monument to be the focal point of the recently built, multi-million Dollar EnglishPoint Marina development, the only Marina project between the Cape and Cairo.
To find the best possible candidate for this huge task the gallery invited sculptors from all over East Africato submit their entry based on a strict brief with the title: Cultural Heritage – The Past and the Future.
Renowned Kenyan artist Gerard Oroo Motondi, who was honoured by President Kibaki with the Head of State Commendation for his service to the Nation, was identified as the best man for the job.
His design proposal was selected from more than two dozen highly qualified and creative local and international entries.
Motondi’s achievements range from winning Kenya a gold medal in Beijing during the Beijing Fine Arts Exhibition, which was held alongside the 2008 Olympics, to having his work on display at the current world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. He has visited the U.S.A., Canada, Turkey, Spain, South Korea and China where he participated in international symposia and exhibitions, thousands of miles away from the soapstone mines of his homeland of Tabaka Village of Kisii County.
The sculpture meanwhile has been completed and can be viewed at the EnglishPoint Marina development in Mombasa. Please have a look at Gerard Motondi’s artist profile and for a detailed account of the project please visit our Facebook page.
One of the premier hotel developments, Swahili Beach Resort offers its clients 5Star accommodation on one of the best beaches in Africa. In cooperation with Swahili Beach Resort the gallery offered clients and visitors of the hotel selected artworks on show to increase awareness of contemporary African Art locally and internationally.
'The Maji' Boutique Hotel, a five star exclusive resort on Diani Beach, offers its guests 15 individually designed rooms as well as beautiful restaurant and bar areas. For this project, The Diani Beach Art Gallery went with the flair of artwork from Nakibinge Sadat and mixed media pieces by Ronald Kerango. The paintings match the African design of the hotel and can be seen in the public areas. Here are a few snippets of the artwork as displayed.
The gallery was invited to showcase a selection of contemporary African Art in the public areas of Leopard Beach Resort and Spa, a high-class hotel in Diani Beach. Artists Ronald Kerango and Ssali Yusuf's pieces were chosen to fit in with the hotel’s décor and interior design. Please see some images below, or visit Leopard Beach Hotel, where artwork still can be seen in the public areas.
Lantana Coral Drive in up-market Old Nyali, Mombasa, is a collection of exclusive villas built in a contemporary Swahili design. The Diani Beach Art Gallery was asked to show artwork from various artists: Mark Kassi, Adrian Nduma, Adonias Ocom, Sebandeke Muhammad and Paul Kasambeko were selected for this project. This album offers a view of some of them in situ.
