Have you seen artwork you love but which is no longer available? Do you like the style of a certain artist and want to have an original piece, created only for you? Or do you have a specific space perfect for an original artwork, but can’t find the right piece? Why not commission a piece from the artist! We work very closely with the artists in our gallery and are happy to get a quote for your own personal and unique piece of art.

A client selected artist Jimnah Kimani, whose work can be seen at Java Coffee Houses in Nairobi and Mombasa, for a commission. The piece now adorns a company board room in Dubai.
The stages of a commission include the concept, sketch on canvas or model sculpture, and final creation of the piece.

STAGE 1: IDENTIFYING ARTIST TO COMMISSION & CONCEPT

• Firstly, let us know what kind of art piece you have in mind. Depending on your preferences we will create an initial brief for the artist.
• Then, choose the artist you would like to create the piece for you. If you have an artist in mind already, please let us know and we will determine if a commission will be accepted.
•After the brief has been agreed on and the artist has been chosen, cost and time frame will be agreed.

STAGE 2: CREATION OF ARTWORK

• First draft of artwork- this is the sketching phase.
• At each stage of the painting you will receive updates and images of the progress.
• After your final approval of the piece the painting will be completed and left to dry before shipping to you.

STAGE 3: DELIVERY OF FINAL ARTWORK

• The final artwork is shipped to you.
• The piece is installed in its final place (if so agreed).

Do you have an ideal space or area in your home or office in which you would like to display a sculpture? Or do you have a particular design idea you want brought to life by a sculptor?

Here we show you an example of Ugandan sculptor Patrick Mulondo, who was commissioned to create sculpture that would be placed in the beach restaurant at The Sands at Nomad Hotel, Diani Beach.

He opted to work on a guitar made from junk metal pieces that would both add to the aesthetics of the restaurant while drawing people’s attention towards reclaimed and recycling material.

Sculptures come in many shapes, sizes and materials, but commissioning one doesn’t have to be difficult. Outlined below are the steps entailed in the process:

STAGE 1: CREATING CONCEPT AND SOURCING MATERIAL

• In collaboration with you, a detailed brief for the sculptor is created
• The sculptor then creates a miniature model, or Marquette, based on the brief
• Once the final shape and appearance of the sculpture has been agreed, the sourcing of the right materials begins

STAGE 2: WORKING ON THE SCULPTURE

• Work begins on the sculpture
• You will be sent images of the progress throughout the creation process
• Finalising and finishing the sculpture

STAGE 3: INSTALLATION OF SCULPTURE

• The sculpture is transported to its final location for placement
• The finished sculpture is mounted securely on site

The Diani Beach Art Gallery was tasked to commission a magnificent sculpture to be the centre point of the recently built, multi-million Dollar EnglishPoint Marina project in Mombasa, Kenya. Renowned Kenyan sculptor Gerard Oroo Motondi was selected to create the sculpture, which now can be seen at English Point Marina.

• The selected piece of raw stone will be prepared and transported to the work site.

STAGE 2: WORKING ON THE SCULPTURE

• Various tools are used to create different surfaces on the sculpture, depending on the Marquette agreed upon.
• The final touches are applied in this last stage as the monument nears completion.

• The base stone is put in place and anchored to insure secure placement of the monument.
