Country: Ethiopia  •   Medium: Oil on canvas

Born in Ethiopia to Eritrean parents, Fitsum Woldelibanos came to Kenya six years ago. He describes himself as formally self-taught after a short stint at an art academy in the Eritrean Capital, Asmara.
The first time Fitsum came in contact with the Arts was through his participation in the Shankar Children’s Competition in 1986. After he had finished high school Fitsum went on to the University of Asmara, Eritrea. It took him 12 years before he took a significant step towards the Arts again.
He now works in a home studio and spends two days a week teaching art at the Lyce?e Diderot in Nairobi.
"When you start to mix colour that is also as important as painting on the canvas. That's when you are ready; when you really see the colour you want. You already can tell what kind of reaction it's going to bring on the canvas," (Interview, Reuters, 2009)
Fitsum has already created a niche for himself in the art world, having participated in exhibitions in France, Germany and Austria.
